The Guide: July 2026

It’s our mid-winter edition of The Guide this month.

July marks NAIDOC Week 2026 (5–12 July), a time to honour the culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s official theme, 50 Years of Deadly honours the five decades of NAIDOC Week – the people who built it, the stories that have been shared, the culture that has been celebrated, and the leadership that has inspired.

Closer to home the free Sunshine Coast NAIDOC Family Day will take place at Kings Beach Caloundra on Sunday 5 July from 10am - 4pm.

To learn more about what is happening head to the official NAIDOC website and explore local events via the NAIDOC Regional Guide.

Approach - presented by IN | artist run initiative

Through moving image, photography, rock, moss and floral sculpture, Approach brings together the practices of Chelsea Holden and Ryan Jones.

Developed during their 2026 Cellmates Residency, the work emerges from a shared life spent outdoors. Walking, climbing, observing and returning to the natural environments that shape their daily experience. Rather than depicting the landscape as a distant subject, the exhibition considers how sustained attention can foster a deeper relationship with place.

Together, the works invite a slower way of looking; one grounded in curiosity, observation, and appreciation.

Saturday 4 July, 6pm-8pm, The Old Lock Up, Maroochydore | RSVP here. ‍ ‍

EXHIBITION

LORE and LAND is an exhibition grounded in the deep cultural knowledge, ancestral connections, and sovereign rights of Australian First Nations peoples.

The exhibition recognises that lore is not simply story - it is so much more: an enduring system of knowledge, responsibility, kinship, and custodianship that binds people to Country across generations. A celebration of the resilience, brilliance, and continuity of First Nations cultural knowledge, and a challenge to Australia to recognise, respect, and uphold the sovereign rights, lore, and custodianship that have existed on this continent since time immemorial.
